Homemade doTerra Sunscreen Bars

Make your own sunscreen with doTerra!

homemade sunscreen bars Homemade Sunscreen Bars Adapted from a recipe on http://wellnessmama.com

Avoid all the chemicals and potential carcinogens in store bought sunscreen!

It’s also easier to apply, since it is in a bar (use it almost like soap) and easier for kids to do themselves.

I would recommend keeping it in the cooler if you take it to the beach, because it will start to get soft when the temperature hits the high 80s, but it will store well at room temperature.

I’d also encourage experimenting with how much coverage you want based on how much Zinc Oxide you add to the recipe, as this will be a smoother and thinner (and more waterproof) coverage

Sunscreen Bar Ingredients:

1 cup coconut oil

1 cup shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter (or a mix of all three equal to 1 cup)

1 cup beeswax (can add an extra ounce or two if you want a thicker consistency, which leaves less lotion on the skin when used)

2 tablespoons (or more) of Zinc Oxide (available online or in many stores on the diaper aisle, just make sure it is pure zinc oxide- For those concerned about contaminants or nano-particles, this version has larger particles)

5-10 drops of your favorite doTerra Essential Oil  (I recommend Lavender since its soothing to the skin – especially in cases of burns. Do not use Citrus Oils since most can cause skin sensitivities in the sun.)

How to Make:

Combine all ingredients (except zinc oxide and essential oil) in a double boiler, or a glass bowl over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in it.

Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients constantly until they are melted and smooth:

lotion bars recipe Homemade Sunscreen Bars

Remove from heat and add the zinc oxide powder and  essential oils.

Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.

Carefully pour into molds or whatever you will be allowing the lotion bars to harden in. I used silicon baking cups, though any mold would work. This recipe exactly filled 12 silicon baking cups when I made it.

Allow the lotion bars to cool completely before attempting to pop out of molds.

—————————-

They can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge or freezer for longer term storage. Keep below 80 degrees or they will melt.

Adjust coverage to your needs and be careful not to burn while determining how long you can spend in the sun with these.

—-

It is also important to protect your skin internally by making sure that your body has the nutrients it needs to avoid burning, even when you don’t use sunscreen.

Our Life Long Vitality Supplements provide everything your body needs to stay energetic and healthy all year.

DIY: Make Your Own Cordless Heating Pad to Use with doTERRA Oils

Homemade Heating Pad Using Essential Oils

resize15

A heating pad can be used for many reasons; on sore muscles, tired eyes, for monthly discomfort, or just to warm up and relax from the cold outdoors.

However you intend to use a heating pad, you can easily customize one for your needs by making your own in the shape, size, or color you desire. Creating your own heating pad also means you are not dependent on staying near an electrical outlet, since this one is microwaveable.

And the best part—you can add essential oils for additional relief and aromatherapy! Let’s get started.

What You Need:

Flannel fabricresize2

Flax seeds

(you can also use rice, dried beans, or corn kernels)

Sewing machine

Fabric marker

Ruler

Scissors

dōTERRA essential oil

Microwave/oven with oven-safe dish

—-

Directions:

The great thing about making your own heating pad is that you can customize it to be any shape or size you want. Decide first which size you want to make before purchasing any fabric, and then make sure to buy enough material. The tutorial below is for a longer heating pad that can be draped over your shoulders or wrapped around your knee, head, or stomach.

1- Cut your fabric into a 17″ x 12″ rectangle. (This took 1/2 yard of fabric).

resize4

2- Fold fabric in half (long way) with the right sides together.

3- Sew 1/4″ seam all the way around leaving a 3 inch opening on a short end.

resize5

resize6

4-Turn right side out.

resize7

5- Take the ruler and divide the length into 4 equal sections, then mark each quarter with a fabric marker. This will make sure that the flax seeds are evenly distributed throughout the heating pad so the seeds don’t clump into one area.

resize 8

6- Loosely fill the first quarter with flax seeds. Sew on marked line. Be careful not to stitch up any of the seeds. (Use about 1 1/2 cups of flax seeds per section).

resize9

resize 10

7- Repeat step 6 until this process has been completed on the other 3 sections.

resize11

8- When last section is loosely filled, turn the opening under 1/4 inch and sew across to seal the heating pad.

resize17

9- That’s it, you’re done! When you are ready to use your heating pad, add 2 drops of essential oil to the outer fabric and microwave until you reach your desired temperature. (2-3 minutes is enough in most instances).

Editor’s Note: If you don’t have a microwave, you can heat your heating pad by putting it in an oven-safe dish and heating it in the oven at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. Remember to set a timer and to frequently check your heating pad to make sure it doesn’t get too hot and become a fire hazard.

CAUTION: The heating pad will be very warm and can burn you if you heat it for too long. Start by putting your heating bag in the microwave for 1 minute, and then increase by 30 second increments until you have achieved your desired temperature. If you accidentally heat it for too long, let it rest until it becomes cooler. You might also want to place a wash cloth or towel against your skin to act as a barrier and to ensure you don’t get burned in case you heat it more than you intended.

===

resize16

resize13

Tips:

If you smell burning while microwaving your heating pad, you are microwaving it too long. Try cutting down the heating time or lowering the power setting to 50%.

Use the leftover fabric to make hand warmers.

resize18

Homemade heating pads make great gifts. Give a heating pad with a bottle of your favorite dōTERRA essential oil to friends and loved ones for a practical gift they are sure to love!

-

Customize the essential oils you use. Have a headache? Put some Peppermint and Lavender essential oil on your heating pad, or directly on your skin before using the heating pad. Congested? Try Eucalyptus or Breathe Respiratory Blend.

The options are endless!

Homemade Deodorant Recipe

Make your own deodorant with doTERRA

*Inspirted from http://www.deliciousobsessions.com

Finally! A homemade deodorant recipe that works… . I gave up commercial deodorants a long time ago, since I knew they were filled with all sorts of toxic ingredients….especially ingredients like aluminum which is known to expedite breast cancer!

DIY: Homemade Deodorant Recipe

2 tbsp. beeswax granules

1¼ tbsp. shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, etc. (I used shea)

1¼ tbsp. coconut oil

½ tbsp. bentonite clay

½ tbsp. baking soda

5-6 drops each doTERRA’s Lemon, Grapefruit, Purify Blend, Lavender, Patchouli & Frankincense essential oils.

DIRECTIONS

1. In a double boiler, or a small saucepan over very low heat, combine the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter until melted completely and mixed well.

2. Whisk in the baking soda and be…

3. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes and then stir in your essential oils.

4. Take an old (clean) deodorant stick and make sure the plunger thing is twisted all the way down. Carefully pour your warm mixture into the container.

5. Let sit with the cap off until it has cooled completely. Then, use as normal….

———

You get the health benefits of having daily frankincense exposure, the detoxing capabilities of Purify, odor producing bacteria killing effects of the lemon, the cellulite reducing effects of grapefruit, and the grounding effect of Patchouli!

-

You can mix & match some of the oils based on preference of fragrance – however –  It is important to realize, that although you can play with this mixture, you will need to have a heavy or low tone oil like Patchouli, Sandalwood, Myrrh, or Vetiver if you want the deodorant to be effective all day.  The heavy oils dramatically lengthen the time it is active on your skin.

Also, if the blend feels too strong for your skin, reduce the Purify and Grapefruit then increase the Lavender.

-

The bentonite clay helps with moisture and odor control, as does the baking soda. If you are sensitive to baking soda, I believe arrowroot or corn starch would work just fine, though I have not tried that….

———-

Have fun!  …and next time you are in the store and a stranger can’t help but sample your aroma you will know why.

Say Goodbye to Dust Mites and Hello to a Cleaner Mattress

DIY: Use These Two Ingredients to Say Goodbye to Dust Mites and Hello to a Cleaner Mattress

sleep

You often sanitize your counters, scrub your bathroom, and vacuum your floors—but how often do you clean your mattress?

Most people spend around eight hours every night on their mattress and are completely unaware that they could be sharing their bed with millions of dust mites.

-

Dust mites are tiny bugs that are so small they can only be seen with a microscope. They stay alive by eating human skin flakes and thrive in a warm and humid environment. Ideal environments for dust mites usually include mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, and fabric-covered items.

Dust mites can even cause an allergic reaction in some individuals that is similar to hay fever and asthma, making it difficult to breathe, or can even cause sneezing or a runny nose.

A simple way to rid dust mites is to clean your mattress, carpet, and upholstered furniture using just baking soda and essential oils.

According to this study, dust mites can be killed by using peppermint, eucalyptus or wintergreen essential oil. When combined with baking soda, which absorbs moisture, deodorizes and sanitizes, this powerhouse duo can be an extremely effective, natural, and non-toxic household cleaner.

——-

What You Need:

resize 1

1 cup baking soda (enough for a queen size mattress)

10  drops dōTERRA essential oil

Mason jar with lid

Sifter

Vacuum

How to Clean Your Mattress:

1- Remove bed linens and wash them in hot water.

2- Add the baking soda and essential oils to a Mason jar. Shake to evenly distribute the oils.

Editor’s note: Use an essential oil that will help further repel dust mites, such as Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Clove, or Rosemary.

resize 3

resize 4

3- Put the baking soda mixture into the sifter and sift across your mattress. (You may need to double your baking soda mixture depending on the size of your mattress).

resize 5

resize 6

4- Leave the mixture on your mattress for at least an hour. The longer you leave it, the better the results.

5- Once the mixture has been on the mattress for at least an hour, use your vacuum hose to remove the mixture from the mattress.

resize 7

6- Make your bed with clean sheets and enjoy the fresh smell of your mattress. Repeat every 2-3 months, or as often as needed.

Editor’s note: To deep clean your carpet or upholstered furniture, mix together the baking soda and essential oils and sift onto whatever area you are cleaning. Let it sit for at least one hour and then vacuum. It’s easyand effective!

Make Your Own Signature Essential Oil Perfume Blend

Make Your Own Signature doTERRA Essential Oil Perfume

If you are interested in making your own perfume blend, here are a few basics of perfumery to get you started:

-

There are top, middle, and base notes to perfumes. Below explains what each note is and essential oils that can be classified in each category.

Top Note: the first scent you will smell when applied. These are usually lighter scents that can fade quickly.

Essential oil top notes could include: Basil, Bergamot, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Coriander, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Wild Orange, Peppermint, Melaleuca, and Thyme.

Middle Note: sometimes referred to as “heart notes,” make up the majority of the blend. You can usually smell the aroma when first applied, but usually takes 10-30 minutes to fully develop. The middle note is usually what classifies it to their fragrance family (floral, musky, oriental, fruity…).

Essential oil middle notes could include: Black pepper, Cypress, Fennel, Geranium, Lavender, Marjoram, Melissa, Rosemary, and White Fir.

Base Note: are the ones that last the longest and have the greatest molecular weight. These are the notes that make the fragrance last longer and help the evaporation rates of the top and middle notes slow down.

Essential oil base notes could include: Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Frankincense, Ginger, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Ylang Ylang.

Materials Needed:

  • Top, middle, and base note essential oils of your choice.
  • Glass bottle to hold perfume mixture. (You can find different bottle choices at online retailers. Some bottle options include a spray bottleglass vial, or roll-on vial).
  • Carrier oil (dōTERRA fractionated coconut oil is recommended for best results but you could also use jojoba oil or a high proof alcohol).
  • Dropper for carrier oil. (Here is one option).
  • Pen and paper to record drop amounts.

-

Instructions:

  1. Starting with your base note essential oil, put a few drops in the glass bottle. Record number of drops on paper.
  2. Next use your middle note essential oil and put desired drops in the glass bottle. Smell as you go along and add more if you want the middle note to be stronger. Record number of drops on paper.
  3. Drop your top note essential oils into the glass bottle. Smell and adjust your perfume to your desired fragrance, add more base or middle notes if needed. Record number of drops on paper.
  4. Once you have the essential oil blend as you would like it, multiply the drops in the glass bottle by 4 to calculate the total amount of carrier oil drops (or alcohol) to add next. For example, if you did 10 base note drops, 10 middle note drops, and 10 high note drops then you have 30 drops of essential oil. Multiply the 30 drops by 4 to get the amount of drops of carrier oil you need to add. In this case it would be 120 drops (30 x 4 = 120). Use your dropper for the carrier oil and put the correct amount of drops into the glass bottle.
  5. Let the blend mature for 2-4 days before using. You can still adjust and add oils to your perfume after this “perfume maturing” stage to get your desired results.

-

Tips:

Start with a small sample of your fragrance first so you can use it as a sample. If you like it, take your recorded drop amounts and multiply them to produce a larger amount of the fragrance.

There are no exact recipes when it comes to perfumes because you can add more or less of whatever note to get your desired fragrance. This is where  you can have fun and experiment with your own unique scent.

You can have more than one type of note in your  mixture. For example, your mixture could include 3 different top notes, 2 different middle notes, and 2 different base notes. Do what smells right to you.

Apply perfume to skin rather than clothes. For best results, apply on wrists.

For a body mist, add 5-10 drops of essential oil to 4 ounces of water and shake well.

Have fun! Experiment and find the mixture that belongs to you.

Fragrance Ideas:

Mix #1: Peppermint, Lavender, Sandalwood.

This scent is fresh, refreshing, clean, and has a hint of musk.

Mix #2: Citrus Bliss, Fennel, Vetiver.

This scent is woodsy, sweet, and citrusy.

Mix #3: Cassia, Cypress, Vetiver.

This is a very sweet and spicy scent.

Mix #4: Basil, Lavender, Ylang Ylang.

This is a fresh and floral scent.

Based on a Facebook poll asking users which dōTERRA essential oil or blend they use as their perfume/cologne? Here are the top 5 answers:

Whisper – Citrus Bliss - Balance - Serenity - Lavender

Why not make it a girls’ night where everyone could make their own custom perfume blend? This could be a great opportunity to teach your friends the benefits of essential oils.

————–

Why Make Your Own Perfume/ Cologne?

Are you in love with your perfume or cologne? Well, you might be interested to know that your perfume may actually only contain chemicals that are made to trick your senses into thinking you are smelling natural scents. Scary, right?

Because of the Federal Fair Packaging Act of 1973, a loophole was created where fragrance companies don’t have to list all of the ingredients in their products, unlike every other cosmetic industry where they are required to list all ingredients on product labels.

This loophole allows cosmetic industries to use chemicals that make you feel like you are smelling lavender, when it really is everything but. These chemicals can sometimes cause allergic reactions and sensitivities that can result in sneezing, rashes, runny noses, dry skin, and more.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) did a study that revealed 38 secret chemicals in 17 of some of the most popular name brand fragrance products. In this study, EWG also noted that a fragrance can be made from any number of the fragrance industry’s 3,100 stock chemical ingredients that can be mixed to mimic almost any smell. That’s 3,100 different chemicals!

The EWG also found that “the average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label. Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.” Click here to view the study.

Essential oils have been used as perfume and cologne around the world for centuries. Whether you are using a single oil, or are mixing and matching essential oils to find your perfect fragrance, you will always have one thing — the peace of mind you are doing good to your body while smelling wonderful at the same time!

DIY: Aromatherapy Jewelry for Your dōTERRA Essential Oils

Make your own Aromatherapy Jewelry

Aromatherapy jewelry is a great way to experience the power of aromatherapy throughout your day. What’s even better is that you can easily make your own aromatherapy jewelry right at home. There is no need to be a crafty person—this DIY project is fun and easy for everyone to do. So go grab some friends (and of course your essential oils) and get together to have a fun girls’ night making homemade jewelry.

-

But first, what is aromatherapy jewelry? The jewelry itself is made out of natural clay that can absorb essential oils (such as terra-cotta). You can also find aromatherapy jewelry that is made out of glass or wood (view examples here and here). You can make any type of jewelry you desire: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, beads,  etc. Once the clay is sculpted and dried, you can add the essential oil or blend of your choice to the jewelry. The oil absorbs into the clay and allows you to smell and experience the power of essential oil aromatherapy throughout your day. It’s like your own personal diffuser that goes wherever you do!

Here is a tutorial on how to make necklace pendants, but you can use this same technique to make car air fresheners, Christmas ornaments, key chains, and more. They make wonderful presents as well.

Editor’s tip: Store your scented jewelry when it is not being worn in your linen closet or dresser drawers to keep fabrics smelling great.

-

Materials:

  • Terra-cotta clay (you can find terra-cotta clay that you can bake in your oven or air dry at most large craft stores)
  • Sand paper
  • Stamps (small—no more than 1 inch in diameter)
  • Shish kabob stick (or toothpick)
  • String
  • 1-1.25 round cut-out object (can use caps left over from hair products, bottle caps, cookie cutter, etc.)
  • Rolling pin (or pen/pencil will work)
  • Scissors
  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax paper

-

Directions:

1. Grab a handful of terra-cotta clay and rub in palms of hands until it’s soft and pliable.

2. Place a piece of wax paper on the table.

3. Use the rolling pin to roll out the clay until it’s 1/8 inch thick.

4. Take your round object for cutting out circles and press firmly into the clay to make the pendant.

5. Remove the excess clay from the cut out pendants. Take each pendant and stamp the design into clay.

6. Once you have stamped the pendants, take your shish kabob stick (or toothpick) and make a hole in the pendant. Make sure the hole is big enough to fit two strands of string into.

7. With the left over clay, make a few small round beads and put a medium to large size hole in the center of it.

8. Once all the pendants have holes, place them on a cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil and bake or air dry according to the specifications provided with your clay.

9. If baking in the oven, be careful to not overbake. They may seem bendable as soon as you take them out of the oven, but they will harden once they cool completely.

10. Once cool, use sandpaper to lightly smooth away any rough edges. It will temporarily change the color of the clay, but it will return to normal once essential oils are applied.

11. Take your string and cut it to your desired length. You might want to add 4-5 extra inches just to be safe. You can always cut the string shorter later on.

12. Take your pendant and put both ends of your string through the hole. Pull the ends through and put them through the loop. Pull tight. This will help your pendant lay flat on your chest.

13. If you want a shorter necklace that can easily be taken on and off, follow steps 14-15. If not, just tie the two strings together.

14. On one end of the necklace tie a knot a couple inches down. Place a bead on next and then tie a knot on top of the bead so the bead is securely in place. On the other end of necklace, tie a loop that is large enough for the bead to fit through. Cut off any extra string. To take your necklace on and off, simply put the bead in the hole that will act as a clasp.

15. Your necklace pendant is done! Now let’s add the aromatherapy element to it.

16. Put 1 drop of your preferred essential oil onto the pendant. Rub the oil around.

That’s it! Your necklace is ready to wear so you can enjoy mood-enhancing essential oils throughout the day! If the scent begins to fade, you can add another drop to the pendant. Remember that a little essential oil goes a long way. 1 drop is plenty.

HOMEMADE DOTERRA GEL AIR FRESHENERS

How To Make Your Own Gel Air Fresheners

How To Make Your Own Gel Air Fresheners

(Recipe by www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com)

gel air fresheners

  • 2 cups distilled water to 10 drops of your favorite doTERRA essential oil
  • 4 individual envelopes of unflavored gelatin
  • 2 tbsp. salt
  • heat-safe containers (my favorite container…Mason jars!)

-

gel air freshener

In a saucepan, heat 1 ½ cups of the distilled water & essential oil combination and the salt until the salt is dissolved. Then add the gelatin, and stir until thoroughly dissolved. Remove from heat. Add the remaining distilled water & essential oil blend and stir until completely combined. Pour into containers and allow to cool thoroughly.

-

To give them a little more of a “home decor” feel, I decided to add a little color and texture to the rather nondescript gel with a tiny bit of food color and some silk flower petals I “cannibalized” from some other silk flowers I had laying around the house.

-

-

You can change the intensity of the scent by adding more or less essential oil; start with 10 drops of oil to 2 cups of water and adjust as desired. You can also try different COMBINATIONS of oils to make a special scents.

If you want (but it’s not necessary) you can create a vented lid for your air fresheners by punching out several holes using an ordinary paper punch.
