Homemade doTerra Sunscreen Bars

Make your own sunscreen with doTerra!

Avoid all the chemicals and potential carcinogens in store bought sunscreen!

 It’s also easier to apply, since it is in a bar (use it almost like soap) and easier for kids to do themselves.

 I would recommend keeping it in the cooler if you take it to the beach, because it will start to get soft when the temperature hits the high 80s, but it will store well at room temperature.

I’d also encourage experimenting with how much coverage you want based on how much Zinc Oxide you add to the recipe, as this will be a smoother and thinner (and more waterproof) coverage

Sunscreen Bar Ingredients:

1 cup coconut oil

1 cup shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter (or a mix of all three equal to 1 cup)

1 cup beeswax (can add an extra ounce or two if you want a thicker consistency, which leaves less lotion on the skin when used)

2 tablespoons (or more) of Zinc Oxide (available online or in many stores on the diaper aisle, just make sure it is pure zinc oxide- For those concerned about contaminants or nano-particles, this version has larger particles)

5-10 drops of your favorite doTerra Essential Oil  (I recommend Lavender since its soothing to the skin – especially in cases of burns. Do not use Citrus Oils since most can cause skin sensitivities in the sun.)

How to Make:

Combine all ingredients (except zinc oxide and essential oil) in a double boiler, or a glass bowl over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in it.

Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients constantly until they are melted and smooth:

Remove from heat and add the zinc oxide powder and  essential oils.

Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.

Carefully pour into molds or whatever you will be allowing the lotion bars to harden in. I used silicon baking cups, though any mold would work. This recipe exactly filled 12 silicon baking cups when I made it.

Allow the lotion bars to cool completely before attempting to pop out of molds.

They can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge or freezer for longer term storage. Keep below 80 degrees or they will melt.

Adjust coverage to your needs and be careful not to burn while determining how long you can spend in the sun with these.

Homemade Deodorant Recipe

Finally! A homemade deodorant recipe that works… . I gave up commercial deodorants a long time ago, since I knew they were filled with all sorts of toxic ingredients….especially ingredients like aluminum which is known to expedite breast cancer!

DIY: Homemade Deodorant Recipe

2 tbsp. beeswax granules

1¼ tbsp. shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, etc. (I used shea)

1¼ tbsp. coconut oil

½ tbsp. bentonite clay

½ tbsp. baking soda

 5-6 drops each doTERRA’s Lemon, Grapefruit, Purify Blend, Lavender, Patchouli & Frankincense essential oils.

DIRECTIONS

1. In a double boiler, or a small saucepan over very low heat, combine the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter until melted completely and mixed well.

2. Whisk in the baking soda and be…

3. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes and then stir in your essential oils.

4. Take an old (clean) deodorant stick and make sure the plunger thing is twisted all the way down. Carefully pour your warm mixture into the container.

5. Let sit with the cap off until it has cooled completely. Then, use as normal….

You get the health benefits of having daily frankincense exposure, the detoxing capabilities of Purify, odor producing bacteria killing effects of the lemon, the cellulite reducing effects of grapefruit, and the grounding effect of Patchouli!

You can mix & match some of the oils based on preference of fragrance – however –  It is important to realize, that although you can play with this mixture, you will need to have a heavy or low tone oil like Patchouli, Sandalwood, Myrrh, or Vetiver if you want the deodorant to be effective all day.  The heavy oils dramatically lengthen the time it is active on your skin.

Also, if the blend feels too strong for your skin, reduce the Purify and Grapefruit then increase the Lavender.

The bentonite clay helps with moisture and odor control, as does the baking soda. If you are sensitive to baking soda, I believe arrowroot or corn starch would work just fine, though I have not tried that….

Homemade Baby Wipes w/ Essential Oils

Make your own baby wipes with doTERRA essential oils

With all all the harsh and toxic ingredients found in our personal care items, I was happy to find doTERRA has a recipe for making non-toxic baby wipes! Best container to store them in is the tall, cylinder baby wipes container you can buy at the store.

Cut a paper towel roll in half with a serrated knife.  (Hint - name brand paper towels do work much better)

Place half of roll into container and save the other half for later. Pour the following mixture over roll in container:

2 cups of water

2 Tablespoons doterra Fractionated Coconut Oil

10 drops each of doterra Lavender oil and Melaleuca oil

After the mixture has soaked for an hour or more, remove cardboard from middle of roll and start dispensing with middle towel with the cylinder baby wipe container.

(Cost Evaluation :  It costs $2.89 in doTERRA products to make this blend and there are approximately 56 sheets per paper towel roll = $.05 per wipe!)

Plus – no toxins going onto your baby’s body and the oils will actually help improve any diaper rash or irritation so it would save on purchasing separate creams!

Pomegranate Body Scrub

(Pomegranates are full of skin-preserving antioxidants, sugar dissolves and removes dead skin cells, and essential oils scent and nourish the skin.)

1/2 cup pomegranate seeds

1/2 cup white sugar

2 teaspoons vegetable, avocado, or sunflower oil

2 drops of your favorite dōTERRA essential oil (Geranium is fabulous!)

Combine sugar and pom. seeds in a small bowl and crush with a spoon. Add dōTERRA essential oil and mix. Massage gently on wet skin. Rinse off and relax!

Citrus Bliss Hand and Foot Scrub

 (Citrus Bliss is a great source of natural fruit acids that dissolve dry skin, and sugar acts as an excellent exfoliator.)

1/2 cup white sguar

1/2 cup sunflower oil

Several drops of Citrus Bliss essential oil blend

Mix the sugar, sunflower oil, and several drops of Citrus Bliss in a small bowl. Stir, then rub mixture onto hands and feet, especially on dry spots. Rinse and follow with moisturizer.

I had surgery on my right elbow in December.  Two weeks out I started occupational therapy.  However, I started using Lavender neat within about 3 days.  The therapist was going to just use Jergens lotion with Vitamin E.  I told her not to, that I would bring my own oils in.  In one of the roller bottles I mixed Vitamin E (I poked a hole in the end of 6 of the little caplets and squeezed out the oil), 6 drops of Helichrysum, 5 drops of Frankincense, and 4 drops of Lavender, and filled the bottle up with the Fractionated Coconut Oil.  Toward the end of the therapy I backed off of the Frankincense and added lemongrass.  The therapy was twice a week for three months.  I also used Jojoba Oil and it worked really well!  It carried well and absorbed much quicker than the fractionated coconut oil. WOW!  THESE ARE THE GREATEST OILS EVER!!!!!

I have my own testimonial to add.  About 15-18 years ago, I had an accident.  The skin below my left thumb down to my wrist was basically filleted and then burned.  There has always been scarring there.  I made a blend of Frankincense, Sandalwood, and Helichrysum in a virgin coconut oil as a carrier.  I made the blend for a spot of Basal Cell Carcinoma on the side of my nose.  I would apply the blend every morning and evening, I would then wipe the residue from my oily finger on the scar just as a way to wipe my finger, and then I didn’t feel like I was waisting the blend.  I always thought; “what can it hurt”? Acne is a skin condition that causes whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed red growths (papules, pustules, and cysts) to form. These growths are commonly called pimples or “zits.”

Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin, called pores, become clogged.

• High levels of humidity and sweating

Despite the popular belief that chocolate, nuts, and greasy foods cause acne, research does not confirm this idea. Diets high in refined sugars may be related to acne, though.

Steps you can take to help your acne:

• Clean your skin gently with a mild, nondrying soap. Remove all dirt or make-up. Wash once or twice a day, including after exercising. However, avoid scrubbing or repeated skin washing.

• Shampoo your hair daily, especially if it is oily. Comb or pull your hair back to keep the hair out of your face.
