Make your own sunscreen with doTerra!

Adapted from a recipe on http://wellnessmama.com

–

Avoid all the chemicals and potential carcinogens in store bought sunscreen!

It’s also easier to apply, since it is in a bar (use it almost like soap) and easier for kids to do themselves.

–

I would recommend keeping it in the cooler if you take it to the beach, because it will start to get soft when the temperature hits the high 80s, but it will store well at room temperature.

I’d also encourage experimenting with how much coverage you want based on how much Zinc Oxide you add to the recipe, as this will be a smoother and thinner (and more waterproof) coverage

–

Sunscreen Bar Ingredients:

1 cup coconut oil

1 cup shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter (or a mix of all three equal to 1 cup)

1 cup beeswax (can add an extra ounce or two if you want a thicker consistency, which leaves less lotion on the skin when used)

2 tablespoons (or more) of Zinc Oxide (available online or in many stores on the diaper aisle, just make sure it is pure zinc oxide- For those concerned about contaminants or nano-particles, this version has larger particles)

5-10 drops of your favorite doTerra Essential Oil (I recommend Lavender since its soothing to the skin – especially in cases of burns. Do not use Citrus Oils since most can cause skin sensitivities in the sun.)

–

How to Make:

Combine all ingredients (except zinc oxide and essential oil) in a double boiler, or a glass bowl over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in it.

Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients constantly until they are melted and smooth:

Remove from heat and add the zinc oxide powder and essential oils.

Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.

Carefully pour into molds or whatever you will be allowing the lotion bars to harden in. I used silicon baking cups, though any mold would work. This recipe exactly filled 12 silicon baking cups when I made it.

Allow the lotion bars to cool completely before attempting to pop out of molds.

—————————-

They can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge or freezer for longer term storage. Keep below 80 degrees or they will melt.

Adjust coverage to your needs and be careful not to burn while determining how long you can spend in the sun with these.

—-

It is also important to protect your skin internally by making sure that your body has the nutrients it needs to avoid burning, even when you don’t use sunscreen.

Homemade Heating Pad Using Essential Oils

A heating pad can be used for many reasons; on sore muscles, tired eyes, for monthly discomfort, or just to warm up and relax from the cold outdoors.

However you intend to use a heating pad, you can easily customize one for your needs by making your own in the shape, size, or color you desire. Creating your own heating pad also means you are not dependent on staying near an electrical outlet, since this one is microwaveable.

And the best part—you can add essential oils for additional relief and aromatherapy! Let’s get started.

–

What You Need:

Flannel fabric

Flax seeds

(you can also use rice, dried beans, or corn kernels)

Sewing machine

Fabric marker

Ruler

Scissors

dōTERRA essential oil

Microwave/oven with oven-safe dish

—-

Directions:

The great thing about making your own heating pad is that you can customize it to be any shape or size you want. Decide first which size you want to make before purchasing any fabric, and then make sure to buy enough material. The tutorial below is for a longer heating pad that can be draped over your shoulders or wrapped around your knee, head, or stomach.

1- Cut your fabric into a 17″ x 12″ rectangle. (This took 1/2 yard of fabric).

2- Fold fabric in half (long way) with the right sides together.

3- Sew 1/4″ seam all the way around leaving a 3 inch opening on a short end.

4-Turn right side out.

5- Take the ruler and divide the length into 4 equal sections, then mark each quarter with a fabric marker. This will make sure that the flax seeds are evenly distributed throughout the heating pad so the seeds don’t clump into one area.

6- Loosely fill the first quarter with flax seeds. Sew on marked line. Be careful not to stitch up any of the seeds. (Use about 1 1/2 cups of flax seeds per section).

7- Repeat step 6 until this process has been completed on the other 3 sections.

8- When last section is loosely filled, turn the opening under 1/4 inch and sew across to seal the heating pad.

9- That’s it, you’re done! When you are ready to use your heating pad, add 2 drops of essential oil to the outer fabric and microwave until you reach your desired temperature. (2-3 minutes is enough in most instances).

—

Editor’s Note: If you don’t have a microwave, you can heat your heating pad by putting it in an oven-safe dish and heating it in the oven at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. Remember to set a timer and to frequently check your heating pad to make sure it doesn’t get too hot and become a fire hazard.

–

CAUTION: The heating pad will be very warm and can burn you if you heat it for too long. Start by putting your heating bag in the microwave for 1 minute, and then increase by 30 second increments until you have achieved your desired temperature. If you accidentally heat it for too long, let it rest until it becomes cooler. You might also want to place a wash cloth or towel against your skin to act as a barrier and to ensure you don’t get burned in case you heat it more than you intended.

===

Tips:

If you smell burning while microwaving your heating pad, you are microwaving it too long. Try cutting down the heating time or lowering the power setting to 50%.

Use the leftover fabric to make hand warmers.

Homemade heating pads make great gifts. Give a heating pad with a bottle of your favorite dōTERRA essential oil to friends and loved ones for a practical gift they are sure to love!

-

Customize the essential oils you use. Have a headache? Put some Peppermint and Lavender essential oil on your heating pad, or directly on your skin before using the heating pad. Congested? Try Eucalyptus or Breathe Respiratory Blend.

The options are endless!

Finally! A homemade deodorant recipe that works… . I gave up commercial deodorants a long time ago, since I knew they were filled with all sorts of toxic ingredients….especially ingredients like aluminum which is known to expedite breast cancer!

—

DIY: Homemade Deodorant Recipe

2 tbsp. beeswax granules

1¼ tbsp. shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, etc. (I used shea)

1¼ tbsp. coconut oil

½ tbsp. bentonite clay

½ tbsp. baking soda

5-6 drops each doTERRA’s Lemon, Grapefruit, Purify Blend, Lavender, Patchouli & Frankincense essential oils.

–

DIRECTIONS

1. In a double boiler, or a small saucepan over very low heat, combine the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter until melted completely and mixed well.

2. Whisk in the baking soda and be…

3. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes and then stir in your essential oils.

4. Take an old (clean) deodorant stick and make sure the plunger thing is twisted all the way down. Carefully pour your warm mixture into the container.

5. Let sit with the cap off until it has cooled completely. Then, use as normal….

———

You get the health benefits of having daily frankincense exposure, the detoxing capabilities of Purify, odor producing bacteria killing effects of the lemon, the cellulite reducing effects of grapefruit, and the grounding effect of Patchouli!

-

You can mix & match some of the oils based on preference of fragrance – however – It is important to realize, that although you can play with this mixture, you will need to have a heavy or low tone oil like Patchouli, Sandalwood, Myrrh, or Vetiver if you want the deodorant to be effective all day. The heavy oils dramatically lengthen the time it is active on your skin.

Also, if the blend feels too strong for your skin, reduce the Purify and Grapefruit then increase the Lavender.

-

The bentonite clay helps with moisture and odor control, as does the baking soda. If you are sensitive to baking soda, I believe arrowroot or corn starch would work just fine, though I have not tried that….

———-

Have fun! …and next time you are in the store and a stranger can’t help but sample your aroma you will know why.

DIY: Use These Two Ingredients to Say Goodbye to Dust Mites and Hello to a Cleaner Mattress

You often sanitize your counters, scrub your bathroom, and vacuum your floors—but how often do you clean your mattress?

Most people spend around eight hours every night on their mattress and are completely unaware that they could be sharing their bed with millions of dust mites.

-

Dust mites are tiny bugs that are so small they can only be seen with a microscope. They stay alive by eating human skin flakes and thrive in a warm and humid environment. Ideal environments for dust mites usually include mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, and fabric-covered items.

Dust mites can even cause an allergic reaction in some individuals that is similar to hay fever and asthma, making it difficult to breathe, or can even cause sneezing or a runny nose.

A simple way to rid dust mites is to clean your mattress, carpet, and upholstered furniture using just baking soda and essential oils.

According to this study, dust mites can be killed by using peppermint, eucalyptus or wintergreen essential oil. When combined with baking soda, which absorbs moisture, deodorizes and sanitizes, this powerhouse duo can be an extremely effective, natural, and non-toxic household cleaner.

——-

What You Need:

1 cup baking soda (enough for a queen size mattress)

10 drops dōTERRA essential oil

Mason jar with lid

Sifter

Vacuum

–

How to Clean Your Mattress:

1- Remove bed linens and wash them in hot water.

2- Add the baking soda and essential oils to a Mason jar. Shake to evenly distribute the oils.

Editor’s note: Use an essential oil that will help further repel dust mites, such as Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Clove, or Rosemary.

3- Put the baking soda mixture into the sifter and sift across your mattress. (You may need to double your baking soda mixture depending on the size of your mattress).

4- Leave the mixture on your mattress for at least an hour. The longer you leave it, the better the results.

5- Once the mixture has been on the mattress for at least an hour, use your vacuum hose to remove the mixture from the mattress.

6- Make your bed with clean sheets and enjoy the fresh smell of your mattress. Repeat every 2-3 months, or as often as needed.

Editor’s note: To deep clean your carpet or upholstered furniture, mix together the baking soda and essential oils and sift onto whatever area you are cleaning. Let it sit for at least one hour and then vacuum. It’s easy—and effective!

Cinnamon, the common spice, sold in the United States is typically the close cousin Cassia which also is extracted as an effective essential oil with somewhat similar characteristics. True Cinnamon essential oil has more intense properties, is more costly, and some feel more effective. The tropical Cinnamon tree is common to Southeast Asia where the highest quality Cinnamon is grown. Essential oils can be processed from both the inner bark or the leaves of the tree resulting in much different properties. Hence it is important to identify which Cinnamon oil you are using. The oil referenced here is Cinnamon bark and is steam or water extracted from the inner bark of the tree.

-

Historically, Cinnamon was so popular, it was the main reason behind the occupation of Ceylon, first by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and then the British. It has been produced in Sri Lanka for over 2,000 years. Ancient writings reflect that using Cinnamon in the home and wearing on the edges of clothes attracts wealth and abundance; besides a flavoring in many recipes, has great medical properties.

-

DōTerra Cinnamon is of the family Laureaceae, grown in Indonesia and distilled from the bark of the tree.

Cinnamon oil can use for aromatic, topical or dietary purposes. It is among the most antiseptic of the essential oils, and many people find it to be highly romantic.

–

Properties:

Anti-bacterial, Anti-depressant, Anti-fungal, Anti-infectious, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-Oxidant, Anti-parasitic, Anti-viral, Aphrodisiac, Blood Cleanser and Purifier, Candida minimized, destroys common sources of E.Coli, Salmonewlla, Staphylococcus and Listeria, Food Preservative, Herpes Relief, Immune System Stimulant, Natural Diuretic; mixes well with Citrus oils, Cypress, Frankincense, Geranium, Patchouli, Lavender, Rosemary, Clove, Oregano (with coconut oil), Basil, Roman Chamomile.

-

Typical Applications:

Since Cinnamon is both an emotional and physical stimulant its benefits can be enjoyed in a number of ways. Diffusing or as a bath oil (only a small amount since it is very strong, ie hot) can invigorate and help and uplift. As a physical stimulant it can be mixed with a carrier oils and applied topically for sore and painful muscles and joints. Some suggest that for digestive problems that simply a drop of Cinnamon mixed with warm water and a sweetener then slowly sipped helps. It is best to dilute Cinnamon oil, about 1 drop to 40 or 50 drops of fractionated coconut oil, before applying on the skin.

-

Cinnamon oil is said to be an aphrodisiac for many. Try aromatic on a regular basis.

-

Research

Research at the Wheeling Jesuit University in the USA has proven that the scent of Cinnamon has the ability to boost brain activity. The team of researchers led by Dr. P. Zoladz found that people who were administered with Cinnamon improved their scores on cognitive activities such as attentional processes, virtual recognition memory, working memory and visual-motor response speed.

-

Researchers at the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, studied the effect in various food substances including Cinnamon on blood sugar. They found that a water-soluble polyphenol compound called MHCP which is abundant in Cinnamon synergistically acted with insulin and helped in the better utilization of insulin; so patients diagnosed with type two diabetes use less insulin. To sooth diabetes progression, combine 5 drops of Cinnamon with 5 drops of Cypress and apply to bottoms of feet and over Pancreas.

-

Nicole Stevens published results of testing Cinnamon on various cancers with amazing results. See her publication from 2007. (www.aromatools.com)

Precautions:

Cinnamon can be irritating to the skin, especially sensitive areas, therefore dilute with a carrier oil and use a skin test before topical application. This is a GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) oil for internal consumption but should be done so with proper dilution and used with caution) It is recommended to not use it internally with young children. Consult professional advice before use by those who are pregnant or nursing mothers.
