Homemade doTerra Sunscreen Bars

Make your own sunscreen with doTerra!

homemade sunscreen bars Homemade Sunscreen Bars Adapted from a recipe on http://wellnessmama.com

Avoid all the chemicals and potential carcinogens in store bought sunscreen!

It’s also easier to apply, since it is in a bar (use it almost like soap) and easier for kids to do themselves.

I would recommend keeping it in the cooler if you take it to the beach, because it will start to get soft when the temperature hits the high 80s, but it will store well at room temperature.

I’d also encourage experimenting with how much coverage you want based on how much Zinc Oxide you add to the recipe, as this will be a smoother and thinner (and more waterproof) coverage

Sunscreen Bar Ingredients:

1 cup coconut oil

1 cup shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter (or a mix of all three equal to 1 cup)

1 cup beeswax (can add an extra ounce or two if you want a thicker consistency, which leaves less lotion on the skin when used)

2 tablespoons (or more) of Zinc Oxide (available online or in many stores on the diaper aisle, just make sure it is pure zinc oxide- For those concerned about contaminants or nano-particles, this version has larger particles)

5-10 drops of your favorite doTerra Essential Oil  (I recommend Lavender since its soothing to the skin – especially in cases of burns. Do not use Citrus Oils since most can cause skin sensitivities in the sun.)

How to Make:

Combine all ingredients (except zinc oxide and essential oil) in a double boiler, or a glass bowl over a smaller saucepan with 1 inch of water in it.

Turn the burner on and bring water to a boil. Stir ingredients constantly until they are melted and smooth:

lotion bars recipe Homemade Sunscreen Bars

Remove from heat and add the zinc oxide powder and  essential oils.

Gently stir by hand until essential oils are incorporated.

Carefully pour into molds or whatever you will be allowing the lotion bars to harden in. I used silicon baking cups, though any mold would work. This recipe exactly filled 12 silicon baking cups when I made it.

Allow the lotion bars to cool completely before attempting to pop out of molds.

—————————-

They can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge or freezer for longer term storage. Keep below 80 degrees or they will melt.

Adjust coverage to your needs and be careful not to burn while determining how long you can spend in the sun with these.

—-

It is also important to protect your skin internally by making sure that your body has the nutrients it needs to avoid burning, even when you don’t use sunscreen.

Our Life Long Vitality Supplements provide everything your body needs to stay energetic and healthy all year.

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

doTERRA’s Cinnamon Essential Oil

Cinnamon, the common spice, sold in the United States is typically the close cousin Cassia which also is extracted as an effective essential oil with somewhat similar characteristics.  True Cinnamon essential oil has more intense properties, is more costly, and some feel more effective.  The tropical Cinnamon tree is common to Southeast Asia where the highest quality Cinnamon is grown.  Essential oils can be processed from both the inner bark or the leaves of the tree resulting in much different properties.  Hence it is important to identify which Cinnamon oil you are using.  The oil referenced here is Cinnamon bark and is steam or water extracted from the inner bark of the tree.

-

Historically, Cinnamon was so popular, it was the main reason behind the occupation of Ceylon, first by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and then the British.  It has been produced in Sri Lanka for over 2,000 years. Ancient writings reflect that using Cinnamon in the home and wearing on the edges of clothes attracts wealth and abundance; besides a flavoring in many recipes, has great medical properties.

-

DōTerra Cinnamon is of the family Laureaceae, grown in Indonesia and distilled from the bark of the tree.

-

Cinnamon oil can use for aromatic, topical or dietary purposes.  It is among the most antiseptic of the essential oils, and many people find it to be highly romantic.

Properties:

Anti-bacterial, Anti-depressant, Anti-fungal, Anti-infectious, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-Oxidant, Anti-parasitic, Anti-viral, Aphrodisiac, Blood Cleanser and Purifier, Candida minimized, destroys common sources of E.Coli, Salmonewlla, Staphylococcus and Listeria, Food Preservative, Herpes Relief, Immune System Stimulant, Natural Diuretic; mixes well with Citrus oils, Cypress, Frankincense, Geranium, Patchouli, Lavender, Rosemary, Clove, Oregano (with coconut oil), Basil, Roman Chamomile.

-

Typical Applications:

Since Cinnamon is both an emotional and physical stimulant its benefits can be enjoyed in a number of ways.  Diffusing or as a bath oil (only a small amount since it is very strong, ie hot) can invigorate and help and uplift. As a physical stimulant it can be mixed with a carrier oils and applied topically for sore and painful muscles and joints.  Some suggest that for digestive problems that simply a drop of Cinnamon mixed with warm water and a sweetener then slowly sipped helps.   It is best to dilute Cinnamon oil, about 1 drop to 40 or 50 drops of fractionated coconut oil, before applying on the skin.

-

Cinnamon oil is said to be an aphrodisiac for many. Try aromatic on a regular basis.

-

-

Research

Research at the Wheeling Jesuit University in the USA has proven that the scent of Cinnamon has the ability to boost brain activity. The team of researchers led by Dr. P. Zoladz found that people who were administered with Cinnamon improved their scores on cognitive activities such as attentional processes, virtual recognition memory, working memory and visual-motor response speed.

-

Researchers at the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, studied the effect in various food substances including Cinnamon on blood sugar. They found that a water-soluble polyphenol compound called MHCP which is abundant in Cinnamon synergistically acted with insulin and helped in the better utilization of insulin; so patients diagnosed with type two diabetes use less insulin. To sooth diabetes progression, combine 5 drops of Cinnamon with 5 drops of Cypress and apply to bottoms of feet and over Pancreas.

-

Nicole Stevens published results of testing Cinnamon on various cancers with amazing results. See her publication from 2007. (www.aromatools.com)

Precautions:

Cinnamon can be irritating to the skin, especially sensitive areas, therefore dilute with a carrier oil and use a skin test before topical application.  This is a GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) oil for internal consumption but should be done so with proper dilution and used with caution)  It is recommended to not use it internally with young children. Consult professional advice before use by those who are pregnant or nursing mothers.

DIY: Aromatherapy Jewelry for Your dōTERRA Essential Oils

Make your own Aromatherapy Jewelry

Aromatherapy jewelry is a great way to experience the power of aromatherapy throughout your day. What’s even better is that you can easily make your own aromatherapy jewelry right at home. There is no need to be a crafty person—this DIY project is fun and easy for everyone to do. So go grab some friends (and of course your essential oils) and get together to have a fun girls’ night making homemade jewelry.

-

But first, what is aromatherapy jewelry? The jewelry itself is made out of natural clay that can absorb essential oils (such as terra-cotta). You can also find aromatherapy jewelry that is made out of glass or wood (view examples here and here). You can make any type of jewelry you desire: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, beads,  etc. Once the clay is sculpted and dried, you can add the essential oil or blend of your choice to the jewelry. The oil absorbs into the clay and allows you to smell and experience the power of essential oil aromatherapy throughout your day. It’s like your own personal diffuser that goes wherever you do!

Here is a tutorial on how to make necklace pendants, but you can use this same technique to make car air fresheners, Christmas ornaments, key chains, and more. They make wonderful presents as well.

Editor’s tip: Store your scented jewelry when it is not being worn in your linen closet or dresser drawers to keep fabrics smelling great.

-

Materials:

  • Terra-cotta clay (you can find terra-cotta clay that you can bake in your oven or air dry at most large craft stores)
  • Sand paper
  • Stamps (small—no more than 1 inch in diameter)
  • Shish kabob stick (or toothpick)
  • String
  • 1-1.25 round cut-out object (can use caps left over from hair products, bottle caps, cookie cutter, etc.)
  • Rolling pin (or pen/pencil will work)
  • Scissors
  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax paper

-

Directions:

1. Grab a handful of terra-cotta clay and rub in palms of hands until it’s soft and pliable.

2. Place a piece of wax paper on the table.

3. Use the rolling pin to roll out the clay until it’s 1/8 inch thick.

4. Take your round object for cutting out circles and press firmly into the clay to make the pendant.

5. Remove the excess clay from the cut out pendants. Take each pendant and stamp the design into clay.

6. Once you have stamped the pendants, take your shish kabob stick (or toothpick) and make a hole in the pendant. Make sure the hole is big enough to fit two strands of string into.

7. With the left over clay, make a few small round beads and put a medium to large size hole in the center of it.

8. Once all the pendants have holes, place them on a cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil and bake or air dry according to the specifications provided with your clay.

9. If baking in the oven, be careful to not overbake. They may seem bendable as soon as you take them out of the oven, but they will harden once they cool completely.

10. Once cool, use sandpaper to lightly smooth away any rough edges. It will temporarily change the color of the clay, but it will return to normal once essential oils are applied.

11. Take your string and cut it to your desired length. You might want to add 4-5 extra inches just to be safe. You can always cut the string shorter later on.

12. Take your pendant and put both ends of your string through the hole. Pull the ends through and put them through the loop. Pull tight. This will help your pendant lay flat on your chest.

13. If you want a shorter necklace that can easily be taken on and off, follow steps 14-15. If not, just tie the two strings together.

14. On one end of the necklace tie a knot a couple inches down. Place a bead on next and then tie a knot on top of the bead so the bead is securely in place. On the other end of necklace, tie a loop that is large enough for the bead to fit through. Cut off any extra string. To take your necklace on and off, simply put the bead in the hole that will act as a clasp.

15. Your necklace pendant is done! Now let’s add the aromatherapy element to it.

16. Put 1 drop of your preferred essential oil onto the pendant. Rub the oil around.

That’s it! Your necklace is ready to wear so you can enjoy mood-enhancing essential oils throughout the day! If the scent begins to fade, you can add another drop to the pendant. Remember that a little essential oil goes a long way. 1 drop is plenty.

Simple Tip to Freshen Your Bathroom Naturally with Essential Oils

Check out this Simple Tip to Freshen Your Bathroom Naturally with Essential Oils

The idea of making your bathroom smell like a “Spring Breeze” or “Berry Blossom” may be delightful to you, but often those seemingly innocent names for commercial air fresheners are deceptive given the harmful effects that can occur from being exposed to them.

Instead of freshening your bathroom with artificial fragrances that contain toxic chemicals, freshen your bathroom naturally with essential oils using this easy tip.

Materials: All you need is a roll of toilet paper and your favorite dōTERRA essential oil or blend.

Directions: When you take out a new roll of toilet paper, add 2-3 drops of essential oil to the cardboard middle. It will then automatically freshen your bathroom every time it is used.

Concept

The skin and hair are often challenged by a diversity of mechanical, thermal, chemical, or environmental stressors that can induce a response to protect or adapt to the stressor. More often than not, the reaction affects the function of the skin in a negative way. The scalp, and more specifically the hair follicle, plays an essential role in the health of the hair. It is important that scalp concerns be resolved so the scalp can operate under optimal conditions to produce healthy hair. Several practices can contribute to unhealthy hair and scalp. Most of these may not be recognized as having a negative effect. Chemicals used on the hair, such as color treatments, can cause dryness and breakage. Additionally, use of blow dryers and other high heat generating styling tools can damage cuticles, leaving hair and scalp rough and dry. Lack of sleep and poor nutrition can also contribute to hair becoming unhealthy and damaged because the body needs good, healthy nutrients to circulate through the body and promote healthy skin and scalp.
